5 Essential Things I Did at CHIACON23

This is a follow up to this post.

Attending a professional convention in Health Information Management (HIM) can be both exciting and valuable. These conventions offer numerous opportunities for professional growth, from making meaningful connections to staying up to date with industry trends. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the CHIA Convention 2023, where I had the chance to engage with like-minded individuals and immerse myself in insightful lectures on HIM trends.

In this post, I will share five essential things I did, drawing inspiration from my experience at the CHIA Convention 2023.

Networked with Professionals:

One of the greatest benefits of attending a HIM convention was the opportunity to expand my professional network. I took full advantage of networking sessions, engaging in meaningful conversations and exchanging contact information with fellow attendees. Building relationships with professionals in my field will lead to valuable collaborations, career opportunities, and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the following professionals and experts:

There were others whom I met, but I was not able to obtain their names. Hopefully, next year I will have the opportunity to acquire more names.

Attended Relevant Lectures and Workshops:

At the convention, there was a diverse range of lectures and workshops led by industry experts. I carefully selected sessions that aligned with my interests and professional goals (Thank you #whova!). During these sessions, I paid close attention to emerging trends, innovative technologies, and best practices shared by the speakers. I actively took notes, asked questions, and participated in discussions to enhance my understanding and gain valuable insights. Here is a list of the topics covered:

  • Information Blocking and Other Hot Topics in Health IT Policy

  • 21st Century Cures Act: Are You in Compliance?

  • Department of Health Care Access and Information: Emerging Programs, Data Resources and Measures for Hospitals

  • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence: Basics for Health Information

Explored the Exhibition Area:

The exhibition area at CHIACON23 showcased the latest products, services, and technological advancements in the field. I dedicated time to explore this area, visiting various booths and engaging with exhibitors. This provided me with an opportunity to learn about new tools, software, and solutions that can enhance work efficiency and improve patient care. I had valuable conversations with the following organizations:

Participated in Roundtable Discussions:

Roundtable discussions at the convention provided a unique platform to share experiences, challenges, and innovative solutions with a small group of professionals. These intimate settings fostered in-depth conversations and enabled me to gain diverse perspectives on common issues. I contributed to the discussions and leveraged the collective wisdom of the group to expand my knowledge and enhance my problem-solving abilities.

Reflected and Followed Up:

After the convention concluded, I took the time to reflect on my experience. I reviewed my notes, organized the information I gathered, and identified key takeaways. I reached out to the professionals I connected with during the event through follow-up emails or LinkedIn messages. I will nurture these new relationships and will explore opportunities for collaboration or mentorship.

Attending the HIM convention was a transformative experience for me as a professional in the field. By networking with professionals, attending relevant lectures, exploring the exhibition area, participating in roundtable discussions, and following up with new connections, I maximized the benefits of such an event. The CHIA Convention served as a valuable platform for expanding my professional network, learning about emerging HIM trends, and broadening my understanding of the industry. I encourage all HIM professionals to actively engage in these opportunities for growth and continuous learning.

Looking forward to CHIACON24!
