The HI Workforce at a Crossroads: Addressing Understaffing and Preparing for AI

According to an AHIMA survey, the health information (HI) workforce is experiencing significant challenges related to understaffing, driven by factors like employee turnover and recruitment difficulties. These issues have far-reaching impacts on healthcare operations and data management. For instance, professionals surveyed reported understaffing at their organization, which led to lowered data quality, slower release of records, and reduced reimbursements.

To address understaffing, organizations need comprehensive solutions focused on recruitment, retention, reducing burnout, and adopting technologies like AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (machine learning). Half of respondents already use these tools, especially for automation of coding and documentation. AI/ML provides benefits like improved productivity and data quality, but oversight is still needed to ensure privacy and prevent errors. As adoption grows, upskilling will be critical so professionals can oversee AI/ML implementation.

For individual HI professionals, understaffing creates a high-pressure environment with burdensome workloads. Burnout is rampant and professionals often leave their roles due to low compensation. Remote and hybrid policies could improve retention by providing flexibility. At the same time, recent technologies present opportunities to advance careers through upskilling. Emerging roles focus on oversight of AI/ML tools and ensuring their ethical, safe use.

Understaffing has far-reaching impacts, but solutions exist through better recruitment, retention, reducing burnout, and preparing professionals to utilize AI/ML tools. As an HI professional, be aware of burnout risks and seek opportunities to expand your skills. There is a path forward; it will require openness to recent technologies paired with unwavering commitment to privacy, quality, and ethics. Our expertise will remain essential in this rapidly changing healthcare environment.
