Is teamwork so critically important in today’s healthcare organization?
The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is a healthcare delivery model that emphasizes comprehensive, team-based care centered around the patient's needs and preferences. This collaborative approach can lead to better health outcomes as the PCMH coordinates care across all elements of the broader health system.
However, some studies have shown that specialist care may result in better outcomes when treating specific, discrete conditions. This suggests there are benefits to a focused, one-on-one approach between a patient and specialist for certain illnesses.
There are advantages to building relationships between individuals in a workplace setting too. When properly developed, one-on-one partnerships can enable people to play to their individual strengths while supporting each other's growth. Traits like competence, respect, clarity, accountability and drive to progress can be fostered.
Both individualized and team-based care have roles to play in an effective healthcare system. The PCMH model aims to coordinate across specialties to provide patient-centered care, but should also recognize that specialist expertise can be invaluable, especially for treating particular conditions. The same balanced approach applies in workplaces too – interpersonal relationships and teams are crucial, but so are opportunities for individual mastery and accountability. Healthcare delivery and professional development are optimized when we embrace the strengths of both individuals and groups.
